I have never posted a review of a novel EVER and I read A LOT (3 - 4 novels per month). This novel was completely engaging, with excellent characters and a plot that was beyond my expectations. The writing was beautifully evocative and tastefully constructed without it becoming mundane and vainglorious. An absolute luxury to read from beginning to end. Strongly recommended.

Good multi-generational saga
A very good read, surprises in every other chapter

Three adjectives perfectly describe this work captivating, entertaining, and thought-provoking. I recommend very highly, especially for those who love history.
Woody Allen's "Zelig" minus the humor and the art. Overextended, misunderstood, and choppily episodic. Some of the "history" is interesting, especially the graphic descriptions of the Irish famine, but it all feels "researched, " and not in a good way. The attempts to write dialogue are quite laughable, especially the Jewish immigrants on the lower East Side. Why the author thought he could re-create those conversations is a mystery. The approach to the Triangle Shirtwaist fire was beyond obvious, and frankly, I could not make it through that chapter, a rare occurrence. Touching upon so many cultures and major disasters is a kind of hubris. Just surprised he missed the Titanic in this disaster of a novel.
This was an intriguing story with rich characters. The story combined fictional historical events that illustrated the challenges of living in Ireland and coming to America using two men whose paths were different. I found it to be an interesting and educational read.
The novel started of with great promise but it ended with disappointment. Ingenious how the chapters are based on different characters and how intertwined they are, but the ending falls short. It is as if the author ran out of steam.
