LIGHTMASTERS - Number 13 by Author MG Wells

LIGHTMASTERS- Number 13 is a well-written and captivating fantasy novel. MG Wells does an excellent job of attracting a wide range of readers. Although, aimed for a younger adult/adolescent audience...as a senior, I thoroughly enjoyed this science fiction/paranormal novel.

Jessica Wyrd, pronounced word not weird, is anything but a typical teenager. She is an intelligent, feisty, thirteen year old who is living on the edge of a forest in upstate New York after the unfortunate head-on car collision that took her parents lives. On top of trying to adjust to the death of her parents, she finds herself living with two crotchety and eccentric grandparents while attending a school where she is being bullied. Leaving behind her two best friends, Hank and Emma in Georgia, Jessica is homesick and would like nothing better than to return to her old life.

One evening, Jessica ventures into the forest behind her grandparents' home where she discovers three Lightmasters who know she is one of them. However, Jessica must go through an arduous initiation to prove that she is capable of being Number 13. At this point, she enters into a fantasy land with a unique cast of characters, both good and evil, that either try to help her achieve her goal or destroy her. Sartan is the ultimate evil and along with the rest of the Alliance of Lightmasters, they have their work cut out for them in their efforts to banish Sartan from earth. After her first encounter in the forest, Jessica returns to her normal life, but nothing is ever the same. She sees people and life in a much different way and must decide if she is going to join the Alliance and use her mystic gifts or just be a regular teenager...

LIGHMASTERS - Number 13 is a great read that stretches the imagination at every turn of the page.

LightMasters Number 13 MG Wells 9781453885932 Books Reviews

This must be undoubtedly one of the best books I read recently, it's fast yet engaging, simple yet intriguing, and quite hilarious as well. However, it was the dialogues of the book that really caught my attention and I kept on turning the pages until it was finally over. The dialogues are short and prompt, relevant and witty, and very nicely written. I do admit, this is not the type of the book I normally read but I am glad that I did and finished it reading in just one go. Highly recommended.
Wowzers, ya'll. First of all, the characters are a load of fun, and it's easy to get to know their quirks. This is a magical tale that snags you quickly and takes you on a magical adventure to explore unique places and a wide variety of magical creatures. There's life and high school and friends and family and nuggets of truth throughout the story. What a ride! And with the last page turned, I want to go visit again!
“Lightmasters Number 13” is a novel aimed at pre-teens and younger teenagers. It is a fantasy, allowing author M. G. Wells to take them on a journey into their imaginations. Various themes weave through the book -- good vs. bad, positive thinking, and striving even when the going gets tough -- all wonderful ideas to have a younger reader ponder.

Much of the writing is good, capturing that magical essence that is important when writing for this age set. Jessica (aka Lucky Thirteen) turns thirteen as the novel begins, unaware of the adventures that await. She is a normal young teenager, at odds with yet loving her grandparents, dealing with bullies and friends at school, and getting into trouble with teachers. The story is told in first person POV, so we are privy to all Jessica’s thoughts. Teenage angst wrestles with her desire to do what she thinks is right.

The book stumbled a few times. In a couple scenes, the author falls out of the POV and allows the tale to continue without its narrator. There are also a few long, rambling scenes which ultimately don’t seem to have a solid connection with the story, or a believable reason for introducing new characters to the reader. Fortunately, there is enough action in the story to partially mask these issues, and the dialogue helps to keep the story moving.

Pre-teens will probably love this, and some early teens will come along for the ride. Teenagers are savvy today, and may choose to refuse to suspend disbelief with some storyline elements. However, the positive messages contained in the plot are a breath of fresh air. Definitely worth a read, and something to place in front of your young reader. Three-and-a-half stars.
Jessica Wyrd, pronounced Word, was orphaned at 12 and her life was turned upside down. Uprooted from a big city environment and pulled away from her friends, Jessica was forced to live with a pair of unpleasant grandparents in a small town in upstate New York. But on her 13th birthday, something happened.
Jessica is transported to another world by three Lightmasters who believe she has special powers and is the only person who can defeat an invisible alien beast who feeds on fear. Back in the normalcy of her own world, her reality suddenly changes and she is forced to face her own fears in order to defend the human race against an invisible monster.
Lightmasters Number 13 is an outstanding young adult novel. As life gets away from her, not wanting to continue yet unable to stop it, Jessica hides herself from family and friends in her strange new world. Told in a lyrical prose that’s almost poetry in places, I felt like Jessica Wyrd was telling her story to me in confidence.
Lightmasters Number 13 is an engrossing page turner full of adventure and intrigue that makes the reader think on so many levels. The book is a must-read for teens and parents alike. It’s a testament to courage, to goodness, to strength, and to one little girl’s spirit.
